Dr M wants to witness Najib swearing-in

Dr M rushing back from London just in case he is invited to Najib's swearing in

KUALA LUMPUR, April 2 – Unsure whether he has received an invitation, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is flying back from London in the hope of attending Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's swearing in as the country's sixth prime minister.

It is learnt that his associates have been lobbying for an invite for the ceremony scheduled for tomorrow at the Istana Negara.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today tendered his resignation to Yang diPertuan Agong Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, who later called Najib for an audience.

Mahathir has been a trenchant critic of his successor and has lobbied for a quick power transfer to Najib, whom he recently described as not performing well as the deputy prime minister.

"I do not know whether I am invited. But if I am invited, I would like to go," Dr Mahathir told reporters in London. He was there for an alternative event to the G20 summit of world leaders discussing the global economic turmoil.

The former prime minister said he would support any move by Najib to trim the cabinet. "We've had an expansion of the cabinet under Abdullah's leadership but I think that's not necessary," he said.
