Muhyiddin: 5 reasons why we are on the up

TAIPING, April 6 — The Barisan Nasional (BN) is confident of a good result in the by-elections for Bukit Gantang, Bukit Selambau and Batang Ai based on five factors, said Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also director of the BN machinery for the three by-elections.

He said the five factors that could bring victory for the BN in the by-elections this time were the elevation of Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak as the new Prime Minister, the re-entry of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad into Umno and BN as well as the selection of the best BN candidates for the three constituencies as they truly understood the people’s aspirations.

The other factors were the new confidence of the people in the national leadership after various problems and issues had been successfully explained and resolved besides the internal problems faced by the opposition coalition in view of the differences of opinions between their leaders.

“They (the opposition) are at loggerheads among themselves over many issues but show to the people that they are united, and now, public confidence in their candidates is waning.

“For the Malays, (Datuk Seri Mohammad) Nizar’s treachery cannot be accepted, for the Chinese, Nizar only made promises but failed to implement them during his 11-month administration,” he told reporters after opening the new Bank Simpanan Nasional branch in Changkat Jering, here today.

Muhyiddin said Dr Mahathir’s presence here today and in Bukit Selambau had clearly given new inspiration to the voters in the constituencies concerned to make the right choice by voting the BN candidates Ismail Saffian (Bukit Gantang), Datuk S. Ganesan (Sungai Petani) and Malcolm Mussen Lamoh (Batang Ai).

The by-election in Bukit Gantang tomorrow will see a three-cornered fight between Ismail, PAS candidate Mohammad Nizar and Independent’s Kamarul Ramizu Idris while in Bukit Selambau, Ganesan will face PKR candidate S. Manikumar and 13 other independent candidates.

In Batang Ai in Sarawak, Mussen will face PKR’s Jawah Gerang in a straight fight. — Bernama
